A combined modal split and stochastic assignment model for congested networks with motorized and non-motorized transport modes

چکیده
In this paper, a network equilibrium model is proposed for the simultaneous prediction of mode choice and route choice in congested networks with motorized and non-motorized transport modes. In Hong Kong, motorized and non-motorized modes are competing travel alternatives, as the average trip length is relatively short due to highdensity development in urban areas. In addition, non-motorized modes such as walking usually serve as complements to motorized trips. For example, transit passengers have to walk in order to gain access to and egress from transit stops. In this paper, the transit and walking modes are representatives of motorized and nonmotorized transport modes respectively. The fundamental congestion effects of each mode and inter-modal interactions are taken into account in the simultaneous mode and route choice problem. An equivalent variational inequality (VI) problem is formulated to capture all the components of the proposed model in an integrated framework. A solution algorithm is presented for solving the VI problem. A numerical example is used to illustrate the application of the proposed model and solution algorithm. It is found that more refined estimates of travel times and network flows can be obtained using the proposed model.

Evaluating the Willingness to Pay for Urban Congestion Priced Zones (Case Study of Tehran)
Congestion pricing is one of the major travel demand management policies to reduce traffic volumes in metropolitans. One of the main factors for effective implementation of this policy is to analyze users' response to different toll rates. In this paper, the willingness of users to pay for using their personal cars is evaluated. The stated preference method was applied for data gathering. Sever...
متن کاملUsing GPS-derived speed patterns for recognition of transport modes in adults
BACKGROUND Identification of active or sedentary modes of transport is of relevance for studies assessing physical activity or addressing exposure assessment. We assessed in a proof-of-principle study if speed as logged by GPSs could be used to identify modes of transport (walking, bicycling, and motorized transport: car, bus or train). METHODS 12 persons commuting to work walking, bicycling ...
متن کاملHeterogeneity in the Correlates of Motorized and Non-motorized Travel in Germany: The Intervening Role of Gender
Drawing on individual-level mobility data from Germany between 1996 and 2009, this analysis econometrically investigates the determinants of automobile, public transit, and non-motorized travel. We are particularly interested in exploring whether gender plays a role in determining the relative use of motor and non-motorized modes, and, if so, how this role is mitigated or exacerbated by other s...
متن کاملNon-motorized Transport and Sustainable Development: Evidence from Calcutta
The important role that non-motorized transport plays in urban sustainability is discussed with particular reference to the developing world and to the links between environmental and poverty issues. The significance of non-motorized transport in terms of reduced pollution, income maintenance for the poor and providing transport for vulnerable groups is stressed and placed within the general co...
متن کاملAn inventory control model for modal split transport: A tailored base-surge approach
Firms are increasingly interested in transport policies that enable a shift in cargo volumes from road (truck) transport to less expensive, more sustainable, but slower and less flexible transport modes like railway or inland waterway transport. The lack of flexibility in terms of shipment quantity and delivery frequency may cause unnecessary inventories and lost sales, which may outweigh the s...
